| Police warn people to follow the law on using replica guns in public Even though many people consider Airsoft guns to be toys, they are still covered by strict regulations and are classified as category D weapons.
A recent incident in South Bohemia highlighted the dangers of misusing Airsoft weapons and similar replicas, and caused police to warn owners of such guns.
With tensions riding high, the police are concerned that open display of replica guns could result in the owner or an innocent bystander being injured by police.
“Owners of Airsoft guns … gamble with their lives if they do not honor the letter of the law on firearms and ammunition, which has a ban on such weapons being visibly worn in places accessible to the public and finally also on shooting them in these places,” South Bohemian police spokeswoman Martina Joklová said on the police website.
“At a time when people everywhere are talking about the threat of possible terrorist attacks, careless and indiscreet actions can arouse an immediate sense of danger among citizens,” she said.
State security forces have been on high alert and there is the possibility of them using “extreme means” in response to potential threats, she added.
In the town of Vimperk, South Bohemia, a man with an Airsoft replica AK-47 was recently walking around the town with the gun and testing it after it had been repaired.
Residents believed the gun to be real and called police, who responded in full armor and with protective equipment.
Police ascertained that it was an Airsoft gun, but warn that there was a risk the incident could have ended differently.
“Police in the Czech Republic therefore ask the owners of Airsoft guns to comply with the letter of the law on weapons and ammunition in order to prevent a possible fatal outcome in the event of the intervention of security forces,” Joklová said.
Misuse of category D weapons, which includes air guns, carries a fine of up to Kč 30,000 and the possible confiscation of weapons.
